What Is Embryo Transfer?

Embryo transfer is the procedure in which an embryo created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) is placed inside the uterus to achieve pregnancy.

It represents one of the final and most critical stages of assisted reproductive treatment because successful implantation depends on proper embryo-endometrium interaction after transfer.

The procedure is minimally invasive and is usually performed without anesthesia.

When Does Embryo Transfer Occur?

Embryo transfer typically takes place several days after fertilization during IVF treatment.

The timing depends on embryo development:

  • Day 3 transfer involves cleavage-stage embryos
  • Day 5 or Day 6 transfer involves blastocyst-stage embryos

Blastocyst transfer is commonly preferred because it allows improved embryo selection and better synchronization with endometrial receptivity.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

During embryo transfer:

  • the embryo is loaded into a thin transfer catheter
  • the catheter is guided through the cervix into the uterine cavity
  • the embryo is gently released into the endometrium

The procedure generally lasts only a few minutes and patients can usually resume normal daily activities shortly afterward.
